Self-Concept in Childhood and Adolescence and Peers...
This video shows how as children develop an appreciation on their inner mental world, they think more about themselves. They mention concrete characteristics like, names, physical appearance, possetions and typical feelings and behaviors are emphasized in their self-descriptions when they are 5 to 7 years old. In the video a little girl said, ââ¬Å" I like to sing, ride my bike, go to swim in a swimming pool, my teacherââ¬â¢s name is Miss. Fargo, she is pretty nice to me, my favorite subject in school is mathâ⬠. With age young people organized their concrete description into personality traces. Another example of a teenager who said, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m Lisa, Iââ¬â¢m fifteen, Iââ¬â¢m a freshmen, I have a brother, his name is Sean, and I have more sibling. Iââ¬â¢m an athlete,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Sixteen years old Kayla said, the whole idea of bulling is something she knows about first hand because itââ¬â¢s been happening to her for ten years. Interesting enough, the first few times she had no idea what was going on. At the beginning of this video, Kayla talks about her long and horrible experience. ââ¬Å"I really didnââ¬â¢t understand why people were teasing me, it didnââ¬â¢t make much sense to me; not like I am not so different from anybody, whatââ¬â¢s the big deal? It took me a while to realize I had friends and they were talking to me about it. People made fun about my size, also the fact that my family was not well enough, we didnââ¬â¢t have too much growing upâ⬠The more Kayla tried to fit in, the more they made fun of her, saying that she was trying to be something she is not. After speaking to guidance counselors and her parents, she decided to just learn the whole ignore thing and pushed it aside. A couple of her friends were bigger, so they had their little social circle. ââ¬Å"The only reason we stayed together is because anywhere else we were picked onâ⬠. The bullying got worse when she started investigating her interest in other girls her age instead of boys. During Kaylaââ¬â¢s eight-grad year, an opened lesbian girl moved to her town. She always had miss feelings about it and was really confused. When the girl came to town it was like she is going to meet someone who must be going through similar situation and who can understand Kayla. They ended up

Complex Relationships Between Characters in A Dollhouse by...
Complex Relationships Between Characters in A Dollhouse by Henrik Ibsen A Dollhouse by Henrik Ibsen is the story of one womanââ¬â¢s struggle to free herself from a world of guilt and false livelihood. The story is based on the authorââ¬â¢s own account of a fellow friend and journalist named Laura Peterson Kieler who was burdened with a hidden crime just as Nora, the main character, is(Ibsen, 1785). According to Ibsen, Kieler illegally borrowed money with the help of a bank associate by forging the signature of her wealthy father. The money was used to pay for her ailing husbandââ¬â¢s medical needs. Ibsenââ¬â¢s storyline in A Dollhouse is an exact replica of the events of Kielerââ¬â¢s conflicts, but the character of Nora is based on anotherâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The titled ââ¬Å"dollhouseâ⬠is created because of the way they act toward each other. Nora, being Torvaldââ¬â¢s baby and unmovable attachment, and Torvald being the domineering master of the household. Their entire relationship is based on a false sense of reality created by their baby-like banter and the nievity in which they carry out the day to day actions of their lives. For example, Torvald calls Nora his ââ¬Å"little larkâ⬠(Ibsen, 1668) and ââ¬Å"little squirrelâ⬠(Ibsen, 1668). Although this simple name-calling may be considered romantic and loving, there is a hidden side to both characters that is concealed in these childish actions. Helmer grows accustom to being the father figure to Nora and in essence begins to believe in its false meaning. Their relationship is need-based not only from a financial standpoint but from the need for future respect as well. The author states ââ¬Å"Nora is happy because she sees the future in wholly economic terms.â⬠(Hemmer, 1790) Nora has to keep her doll-like image to ensure her future and also to keep her secrets and true identity from being revealed.(Ibsen, 71) She believes that if her strong independent side is shown to her husband he will find out all the things she is hiding including her criminal relationship with Krogstad. Social Work Problems and Issues
Question: Discuss about the Social Work Problems and Issues. Answer: Introduction: Social service is known as those activities which are related to human services and performed to promote the health and well being of people. The main of social service is to become the society more self sufficient, reduce the dependency on others, strengthen the relationship among members of society, and restore the families, communities, and society[1]. Similar goals are followed by social service organizations in Singapore. In Singapore, social service organizations provide their service to all age groups for the purpose to build strong and developed society. For example services provided to childrens who belong to families with lower income, services related to youth and families, childcare, and they also provide services to elder person and disabled persons. Various types of services are provided in Singapore such as counseling to individuals, family in need, accommodation and other kind of support needed by individual[2]. In this paper, discussion is held on the topic of issues faced by social workers in Singapore during period of post-independence that were 1960s to 1980 and issues faced by social workers today. Subsequently paper is concluded with brief conclusion. Issues faced by social worker during early years of post independence: Social service sector in Singapore continued to grow and the government needs contribution and help of others for the purpose of coordinate the various social service. In 1958, Woon Wah Siang, the director of social welfare held meeting and called forty heads of Voluntary welfare organizations (VWOs) for the purpose of discussing the formation of new statutory body. This meeting results in formation of the Singapore Council of Social Service (SCSS). All the contributions of VWOs by bringing all the communities and organizations together for service provided to community and individual was promoted by SCSS and this was the main purpose of SCSS. All these things facilitate the government to providing some essential services to the society such as housing, healthcare, education, and they also provide support to the Social Welfare Department for the remedial work[3]. SCSS introduced the Housing and Development Board (HDB) in 1960. This board builds one new house in every 45 minutes and achieves its goal of building 26000 flats in three years of their incorporation. In 1963, Yang di-Pertuan Negara Yusof Ishak head of the state, declare that housing problem in Singapore was solved. Till the period of 1964 they build 51000 new houses, and they are able to provide home to almost quarter of the population[4]. In 1959, almost 1.6 million citizens were homeless, 300,000 lived in squatters, and 250,000 lived in slums. Within the period of three days HDB offer home to every applicant[5]. In 1950 and early 1960, Singapore faced racial riots and political strife which results in poverty and divided society in close knit communal groups which are pulling the country in different directions. For survival Singapore has to deal with various social, political and communal problems. In 1960, Peoples Association (PA) was introduced for the purpose of encouraging racial harmony and social cohesion, and they also help in building the nation. Meetings are held in community grounds and various ethnic, religious, and language groups participate in these meetings. PA also provides platforms to residents for conducting social and recreational activities. In 1965, they get success when after the short period of federation with Malaysia they secured their sovereignty under the People Action Party (PAP). Members of this party were impressed by the socialist ideas of British community, and they also faced competition from their rivals[6]. This party frame number of policies related to economic, political and social aspects which have great effect on the subsequent development of the country. Generally, PAP focuses on economic development of the country, and allocates very few resources for social development. PAP approach towards social policy is completely different from Britain and other European Countries. PAP frames such social policies which indirectly serve in economic development of the country instead of meeting the social needs of the people[7]. The major social policies farmed by PAP were public housing and social security. The result of this housing policy was amazing because 80% of citizens live in dwellings built by the government of Singapore. System related to social security in Singapore was very different from European countries and other countries. Government does not provide any social insurance to the citizens, and instead government promoted the CPF which was mandatory saving scheme[8]. Housing po licy and social security policy highly contributes in social success of the country, and even after so many difficulties Singapore shows growth of almost 9% per annum[9]. In 1965, when Singapore became independent then there was environment of joy in the nation, but there are number of issues such as welfare relief, rehabilitation, and medical care. SCSS try to develop system which independently deals with these issues and they also put efforts to solve these issues. Between the period of 1960 and 1970, and various VWOs are set up by the SCSS to meet the needs of different individuals in the communities. There are number of organizations which are set up during this period of time such as Churches Counselling Centre (CCC), Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH), and Boys Brigade in Singapore and Singapore Children Society. Before the period of 1971, disabled childrens were not able to attend the school but after that period education system was reviewed for the purpose of disabled childrens. In 1971, Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW) was established. This organization represents professional social workers in Singapore[10]. Issues faced by social worker today: In 1960, the economic development of the Singapore was achieved because of the efforts made by the government and the people of Singapore. Both government and citizens of Singapore was realized that he main asset of Singapore was human resource capital of the country, and firstly Singapore is depend on its human resource and secondly on its foreign investors resources[11]. In this era of time, the main issue faced by social workers is housing problems faced by their clients. There are number of social workers who feel that they are not able to much help of their clients, and many see their clients as victim of the policy flexibility. Social workers stated that it is necessary to review the housing policies of the country because there is income ceiling which must be qualified by the person for getting rent premises, and rent for premises increase in case person crosses the income threshold. There is also one more requirement which is applicable on lower income group that is defined the family units. Social workers further stated that there is need to rethink on the policy related to housing such as only one or two room flats are provided on rent regardless of size of the family[12]. When person buy home then he is making long term financial investment which means that person is continuously employed for the period of 25 years to 30 years, and sometimes both the partners working for the purpose of purchasing home. One more study presented the effect of debt relief in case of low income groups, and policy was initiated last year by Methodist Welfare Services, and in this policy one-time debt-relief was provided to hundreds of households. There is one more issue faced by social workers in Singapore, and that is social workers feel ill equipped while dealing with the clients related to sexual minorities, and these social workers further stated that they had no training to deal with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. Two reports were published on this issue by separate researchers. First report was published in the International Social Work journal on last November, and this report was published by six authors from universities and voluntary welfare organisations, including the National University of Singapore and Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre[13]. This paper highlighted the issued faced by social workers while dealing with such cases. Conclusion: In this we discuss the different issues faced by social workers in Singapore during different periods of time and how social service sector was developed in those circumstances. We also state how different organizations and various groups contribute in the development of social sector in Singapore. For the purpose of dealing with these changing trends and issues in different environments it is necessary that social worker become familiar with these social trends. Swatch Case Study Essay Example
Swatch Case Study Essay Proper time management is an ingredient for business success. Much of what a person can achieve depends on how well available opportunity is utilized. Planning involves allocating duties or tasks in the limited time available. The desire to achieve a lot under constraints of time has been a driving force in the entire human race. In fact, time management has found its way into school literature as a teaching subject which further underscores its importance. Yet one cannot plan what they do not know. A watch has become an important gadget in informing people how much time they have left to finish up their tasks. It also informs people how much time is available so that tasks can be assigned portions of that time for optimally.à à à à A lack of proper time management would lead to huge losses as resources go to waste. Different people at different levels of development have used different methods of measuring time.à The current watches have taken many years to develop.à The earliest man used shadows to know how time slipped away during the day.à Watches are not only used to measure time but to convey much more information including a personââ¬â¢s position on the globe. Before the advent of current day watches analogue watches were used.à These watches had minute and hour hands which moved on a scaled background.à These watches were mechanical they used power to operate.à Some of the watches used batteries that were very tiny but could continue generating power for a long time even beyond one year.à These watches required specialized skills of assembling the many components together so accurately for them to work.à Watches during this time were wealth indicators and thus jewels were added in the designs.à Most of these watches could not be repaired upon damage because opening them required expertise which could only be the artists who made the watches.à The Timex watches were an improvement of the earlier watches.à They were low cost portable watches but they were still very mechanical.à They, however, used less jewelry than the previous generation watches.à The quartz watch which was electronic was invented in the 1970 ââ¬â¢s, an invention surprisingly by Swatch.à This watch used an integrated circuit which was much cheaper than the very many components used by the mechanical watches. The management of Swatch Company was overhauled which saw the creation of nine smaller management teams that were totally in control of all their affairs.à The independence of these teams expanded their capacity to work.à The teams engaged in some kind of healthy competition where each team aimed at doing their best.à This led to great inventions because every employee felt a part of the company.à The management style used earlier had only a few make decisions which were communicated downwards killing the employeesââ¬â¢ morale.à With these teams having all authority over individual departments the company became more sensitive to customers needs. The reorganization of the management led to great inventions being made.à High quality watches were being produced.à The taking up again of the quartz technology put Swatch at level playing field with the competitors.à These high quality watches led to a drastic reduction in production costs which had put Swatch watches at high prices.à The entrance into the market of cheaper watches was the major contributor to Swatchââ¬â¢s downfall.à This again helped the company complete on the same platform with others. Swatch embarked on mass production of watches and they streamlined their distribution channels to take their products to the customersââ¬â¢ doorsteps.à This production strategy kept production costs low and enabled the company to widen their reach to customers.à The distribution channels were expanded to the extent of having outlets at market places.à Customers were well supplied with all Swatch products at every turn. The competitors had adopted similar strategy of supplying their products to customers and Swatch resorted to the same with greater aggressiveness.à The Swatch teams took cognizance of the skills of their employees and resulted to build and use them.à They cast their attention wider and recruited many famous artists to add artistry to their products.à This move helped the company maintain top quality watches but with striking designs.à This drew a greater share of the customers to them because they did not only buy the watches but they delighted in the designs of these watches.à The watches were made to appear more valuable then they actually were and this led to customers buying more than one Swatch watch just because of their attractiveness.à Other products in the market were just watches and Swatchââ¬â¢s were fashionable watches at the same cost. The diversification of products kept Swatch a step ahead of their competitors.à New model watches were made and packaging was done differently.à This gave customers the sense that Swatch had something different to offer, a strategy that attracted more customers.à Different models of watches were designed for different groups of customers.à The Swatch Company grouped the customers into three sectors: the low price, the mini price and the high prize sectors.à For each sector, there were varieties of tailor made watches to fit them.à The Swatch products were also sensitive to age as more designs were made to fit the youth.à Swatch became more sensitive to consumer tastes than other competitors. The strategy that best worked for the Swatch Company was the marketing one.à It was not enough for Swatch to produce good products in large quantities and taking them to all customer joints.à Marketing had to be done to inform the customers that the top most quality, low cost and fashionable products were with them.à They just needed to but them.à Different modes of marketing were used in each country depending on the consumers the advert could reach.à Using artists in the production process was one marketing strategy. Since the artists were popular in their countries, they could easily attract their fans to use the Swatch watches and most did.à The management teams were enabled to do thorough marketing in their respective areas since they understood their customers better. The Swatch Company has to consider diversifying their production line beyond watches.à They should try other commodities that are more in demand in the market and because of their hold on customers, they will easily penetrate.à Watches are not in as high demand because of advancement in technology.à More people use their phones and therefore Swatch should explore new markets by venturing into other commodities.à Good marketing of commodities will ensure they have hold of the market. How to Create a ServiceScape Profile That Gets Results
How to Create a ServiceScape Profile That Gets Results When you enlist your services as an online freelancer in todays digital age, you have to go above and beyond to outshine the competition. With more than 35% of Americans participating in the gig economy to some degree, its safe to say that youre competing against some top-tier talent out there.Thats why it is important to optimally present yourself and your skill set so that clients can be convinced of your worth. We are going to focus on your profile, which is the starting point for every interaction on ServiceScape, and delve into how to clearly communicate what clients want to hear.Your ServiceScape profile contains the following information (in no particular order):DescriptionHeadshot PhotographPortfolioVideo IntroductionCredentialsUsernameRatings and ReviewsPricesThe more effort you put into each and every one of these profile elements, the more successful you will be at attracting clients.A shopping experience always begins with presentation. Think of it this way: when clients come to ServiceScape, their initial interaction is similar to going to a bookstore and browsing book covers that catch their eye. As design expert Sabrina Smelko puts it:They say not to judge a book by its cover, but who are we kidding? Its undeniable that the cover of a book affects your decision to either read on or put it back on the shelf. In todays visual culture, this can be even more true for anyone who runs any kind of business, whether online or brick-and-mortar.With so many visuals coming at us from our computers, phones and various feeds - let alone the world outside our doors - it seems were almost expected to have a cool logo and visually-rich branded content in order to even be noticed. And regardless of whether you want to succumb to this fact or not, as exhausting as it can be, its hard to deny that a first impression can have a huge impact and influence on your business; which, much like a book cover, can determine the number of customers who open the door.Sabrina Smelko, Tips Tricks for Creating a Customer-Catching Storefront DisplayEssentially, your profile is your book cover and is the first step for convincing clients to learn more about you and what you have to offer. We are going to break down each element of your profile, why it is important, and how to curate it to your personal advantage.Lets get started.DescriptionYour description is the brief paragraph that communicates who you are, what you can offer, and what clients can expect from working with you. Equipped with a character limit, its up to you to fit as much information as possible into a concise, witty, and informative blurb. If you are not a writer/editor, its worth considering editing services to ensure your description reflects proper grammar, syntax, and spelling. We recommend, at the very least, that you include the following:Three areas of your expertiseWhat you can promise clients every single timeYour own personal catchy tagline. Something like Lets get to work. After writing your description, you should reread it from the perspective of a client. Is the description written with enthusiasm and energy? Does it connect with you and what you need as an imaginary client? In other words, would you hire yourself? If the answer is no, keep working on it until you are satisfied with the results.Tip #1: Check out other professionals descriptions. See whats working for them. Although you cannot plagiarize, theres no harm in getting a little inspiration from the other people in your field.Headshot PhotographNext, although your description will communicate exactly what it is you can offer clients, your headshot photograph will be the first piece of media they glance over when they discover your profile. Humans are visually oriented, which means headshots can make or break your profile. Here are our tips for what you should consider when picking a headshot:Every headshot must be high resolution; grainy quality automatically tells a buyer that you are unprofes sional.Smile and look pleasant; relatability is important and no one wants to work with a grouch. Here is an example of a good headshot photograph. The photo is high resolution and the individual is friendly and engaging.Although headshots may vary depending on your area of expertise, its worth it to see a professional photographer and to get a real headshot taken. Blurry photos taken by phones and laptops will be noted, communicating to clients that you are not serious about how you present yourself or your freelance business.Be sure to check out the competition. What seems to be the best headshot move for the most successful professionals? This is a good indication of where you should go with the headshot.Tip #2: A little analytics testing is an easy way to find a photo that works best for you. Compare your inquiry results over a 3-month period, with a different photo each month. Which photo performed the best?PortfolioNow that you have a brilliant headshot and descriptive blurb in place, its time to focus on what demonstrates your skills and expertise. Compiling a portfolio that accurately reflects what you can offer clients will take time. Be sure you have approval from past clients to include their works in your public portfolio ââ¬â its not always proper to go ahead and plaster business names from past projects.Remember: people dont have a lot of time today. They are going to sift through your profile quickly before they decide to choose you. That means that quality over quantity is what you want to focus on here. If you provide three different types of writing services, highlight just one piece from each area of expertise. Obviously, spend time reading over the piece extensively to ensure that there are no typos before you use it in your profile.Lastly, as time goes on, one, two, or three years can fly by while youre freelancing online. Update your profile to reflect your most recent work. If you keep showcasing work from a few years ago, clients wil l start to wonder if you are hiding something. Never get complacent!Tip #3: Remember, humans are visual creatures. Try and make your portfolio fun to look at, with eye-popping color and contrasting fonts. You dont want to make freelancer shopping feel like a mundane chore for clients. Here is an example of a great portfolio. You should make your portfolio stand out by uploading sample files that are captivating and attention-grabbing.Video IntroductionThis is a great place to let your personality shine through. In many cases, buyers might skip over the portfolio and description and go straight to the video. Why? Because they are on the go, hoping that you will speak to them so they dont have to read about you. Its just the way of the digital world today.Video introductions dont have to be Hollywood masterpieces. They can be you at a desk, providing a background on your services in just 30 seconds. Whatever you send over, well do our best to improve it on our end before we add it to y our profile. Well edit your video and add music so that it is entertaining and informative. However, bonus points for those who can edit their own videos to create a more professional setting. At the very least, in your video introduction, try to include:A simple introduction: Hello, and thank you for looking at my profileWhat you can do for clients on ServiceScapeHow long youve been freelancing (only if you are not a new freelancer)A couple of interesting facts/tidbits that make you seem charismatic, funny, or interestingIts definitely worth investing in video production services to get this video introduction just right. An impressive video can boost your profile popularity tremendously.Hiring a video production service is a smart idea. High-quality video content will allow you to build trust by providing a face and a voice to your freelance venture within a professional setting.CredentialsIf a video introduction represents one side of the selling yourself spectrum in which charism a count for a lot, credentials definitely represent the other side. This is where clients will learn about what you have specifically done and how that specifically applies to what they need.A ServiceScape credential contains just the name of a position/degree and the institution where you held that position/received that degree. Nothing more and nothing less. This allows a client to quickly glance though your experience and expertise without any sales pitch and to get to the core of what you do best. You should select your credentials carefully, making sure that each one makes a case for why you are an expert in your field. The listed order of your credentials is also important. If you have a Ph.D., dont have your B.A. degree as your first credential.UsernameYour username is the brand name for your freelance business. This is going to be the largest piece of text within your profile, so making it stand out is a priority. The catchier and more creative your username is, the more like ly it is that you will capture the interest of potential clients. As Arun Bhati, CEO of Orahi, stated in Entrepreneur.com:Good names, like good logos, evoke a strong passion for your brand, while bad names elicit distaste or worse still, indifference. A great brand name can be a solid competitive advantage for your company, especially when feature sets between two or more brands are roughly the same. A brands value is what it offers its customers and what it promises to do for them in the long run and must convey its uniqueness in a way that the customer is drawn to use it just by the mention of its name.Arun Bhati, Why Brand Name is Important for Start-Ups?Some professionals use their first names as their usernames. Though it does make your profile more personable, a username can also convey your professional capabilities. When deciding on your username, take a look at your competition first and see how they approach this issue.Tip #4: Coming up with a witty username can be difficu lt. Even if you find a username that you like, the idea could already have been taken by another ServiceScape professional. The best thing to do if you are out of ideas is to try a business name generator. There are many generators out there that you can try. After using a few of them, you should be able to find a username that is a unique and memorable representation of your services.Ratings and ReviewsThis is where your client interaction skills will shine through, whether you want them to or not. Thats why its so important to practice proper customer service with every single client, no matter how you feel about them. At the end of the day, they get to review you publicly, and that goes on your profile. Other clients will be able to read it. Go above and beyond, especially during your first few projects, to impress your clients. A stellar review can easily grab you another five projects.Review volume will give veteran freelancers an advantage. However, if you are new to ServiceSc ape dont worry. Building a client base takes time. With enough commitment and dedication, you can rack up the same number of reviews as those ahead of you today.PricesLastly, your profile is where clients can mull over your prices. If you dont know how to price a service, we recommend the following suggestion:Find five sellers in your field who seem to be dominating. Add up their rates and divide by five. Use that number as your initial rate for starting out.As time goes on, you can always increase your prices. You never want to come in so high that no one wants to buy from you, though. Understanding Place Value Decimals, Large Numbers, and Easy Charts
Understanding Place Value Decimals, Large Numbers, and Easy Charts SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips How do you read 4,349,394.382? What does each digit mean? How do you know what number means what? With place values, thatââ¬â¢s how! If you donââ¬â¢t understand how decimal place values work, a number like that can look like a bunch of nonsense. In this article, weââ¬â¢re going to cover what place value is, why you need to know it, and how to work through place value problems to better understand large, complex numbers with ease. What Is Place Value? Letââ¬â¢s start with the basics. Place value refers to the meaning of a single digit in a specific position in a number. Unfortunately, that definition doesnââ¬â¢t make a whole lot of sense without an example, so letââ¬â¢s look at a number: 14. We know that number is fourteen, just as we know that 14 is the number that comes between 13 and 15. We can even break it down further- 14 is 4 more than 10. 10 + 4 = 14. Clearly, the different digits- the individual numerals that form a number- mean something. The 1 doesnââ¬â¢t mean 1, it means 10. Thatââ¬â¢s because the 1 in 14 is in the tens place. It tells us how many tens are in a number. So in the number 14, there is one ten and four ones- 10 + 4 = 14. If we change that 1 to a 2, we get 24, or twenty-four. The number 2 in the tens place tells us there are two tens. Each place value is 10 times larger than the place value to the right of it. So when we look at a number like 4,349,394.382, our example from earlier, we can see that there are: 4 ones 9 tens 3 hundreds 9 thousands 4 ten-thousands 3 hundred-thousands 4 millions That gives us a better idea of how to read the number aloud. Itââ¬â¢s four million, three hundred forty-nine thousand, three hundred ninety-four. But what about all those digits to the right of the period, or decimal point? Those digits represent parts of one. Imagine this number represents the number of leaves on a particularly big tree. The .382 might represent a fraction of a leaf- perhaps one thatââ¬â¢s been nibbled on by bugs. So how do we read those numbers? In the same way we read all the others, except the digits represent fractions of a whole. The digits to the right of a decimal point work almost exactly the same way, except there is no ââ¬Å"onesâ⬠equivalent. We end the place values representing fractions with ââ¬Å"th,â⬠so instead of tens, hundreds, thousands, the numbers to the right of a decimal are tenths, hundredths, thousandths. More specifically, in our example, .382 equates to: 3 tenths 8 hundredths 2 thousandths Or, read aloud, three hundred eighty-two thousandths. The same rule holds true of numbers to the right of the decimal: each place value is ten times the place value to the right of it. Ten thousandths equal one hundredth, ten hundredths equal one tenth, and ten tenths equal one whole. Put the whole number together, and you get four million, three hundred forty-nine thousand, three hundred ninety-four and three hundred eighty-two thousandths. It may sound confusing, but once youââ¬â¢ve spent a little time with it, itââ¬â¢ll become second nature. Just remember that a digitââ¬â¢s place value represents the meaning of a single digit and that every place value is 10 times larger than the place value directly to the right and youââ¬â¢ll be on the right track. Why Do You Need to Know About Place Values? All of this can seem pretty complex. Why do we even need to know place values? Place values become increasingly important as you work more frequently with decimals and large numbers, because without understanding place values, youââ¬â¢ll have a really difficult time understanding how to read them. Place value is also really important in solving word problems. If a word problem says that somebody bought one thousand and four tacks, you might write that number as 1,400, 1,040, or 1,004 if you donââ¬â¢t understand place values. Only one of those answers can be correct, and youââ¬â¢ll have a much easier time of understanding those kinds of problems with a solid grasp on place values. Place Value Chart One of the best ways to learn place value is using a chart. You can write the different place values along the top and line the digits of numbers up with their correct position on the chart. Hereââ¬â¢s what a place value chart might look like, though you can include more or less columns depending on the number youââ¬â¢re working with. Hundred Thousands 0 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 0 Hundreds 0 Tens 0 Ones 0 Tenths 0 Hundredths 0 Thousandths 0 Ten Thousandths 0 Letââ¬â¢s try filling out a chart with an example number, like 156,412.5485 Hundred Thousands 1 Ten Thousands 5 Thousands 6 Hundreds 4 Tens 1 Ones 2 Tenths 5 Hundredths 4 Thousandths 8 Ten Thousandths 5 We took each digit and wrote it into its proper place. Now if we have a question about what any digit represents, we can answer it quite easily. For example, the 6 in this number represents 6 thousands. This is especially useful when dealing with numbers that contain zeroes. Letââ¬â¢s take this chart and turn it into a recognizable number: Hundred Thousands 3 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 3 Hundreds 0 Tens 0 Ones 5 Tenths 0 Hundredths 0 Thousandths 3 Ten Thousandths 0 Remember, having a 0 in the place value of a number doesnââ¬â¢t mean that you skip it- it means that there are zero of that particular value in the number. 104 means that there are no tens, just one hundred and four ones- you canââ¬â¢t write 14 instead of 104 just because thereââ¬â¢s a zero in it. So in this case, the number would be written 303,005.003. We can drop the last zero since nothing follows it. It might be tempting to write 335.3, but, as you can see, thatââ¬â¢s a very different number from 303,005.003. Understanding place values helps us hold a place for the value that goes into that spot! Place Value Example Problem Letââ¬â¢s work through some example place value problems to get a better handle on how place value works. What Is the Place Value of the 4 in the Number 1,459.235? First, we have to write the number into our place value chart. The decimal will always fall between the ones and tenths place, so we write the nine in the ones place and the 2 in the tenths place, and fill the rest out from there. Hundred Thousands 0 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 1 Hundreds 4 Tens 5 Ones 9 Tenths 2 Hundredths 3 Thousandths 5 Ten Thousandths 0 The question asks the place value of the 4. We look at the digits in the chart to find the 4 and see that itââ¬â¢s in the hundreds position. That tells us there are 4 hundreds, so the place value is 400. What Digit Is in the Thousandths Place in the Number 6,872,485.495? This one is a little different. The number is larger, so weââ¬â¢ll have to extend our chart a bit to fit it. Once again, you can start with the numbers on either side of the decimal, so 5 goes into the ones box and 4 goes into the tenths box, then fill out the rest of the chart from there. Millions 1 Hundred Thousands 8 Ten Thousands 7 Thousands 2 Hundreds 4 Tens 5 Ones 5 Tenths 4 Hundredths 9 Thousandths 5 This time we need to figure out what digit is in the thousandths place. Find the box labeled ââ¬Å"thousandthsâ⬠and see what number is next to it. Itââ¬â¢s 5, and since weââ¬â¢re only asked for the digit rather than the place value, thatââ¬â¢s our answer. What Number has 4 Thousands, 0 Tens, 3 Hundredths, 0 Ones, 5 Hundreds, and 6 Tenths? Notice the zeroes in this question- thatââ¬â¢s where things start to get difficult. Weââ¬â¢ll use a chart to help us figure it out! Fill the proper columns, but pay attention, because the numbers are out of order. Hundred Thousands 0 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 4 Hundreds 5 Tens 0 Ones 0 Tenths 6 Hundredths 3 Thousandths 0 Ten Thousandths 0 Now that we have the numbers placed, we can write it out properly. Remember that the decimal goes between the ones and tenths place. Write it out, and youââ¬â¢ll get 4,500.63! Practicing place value probably won't make you better at dogsledding, but it can't hurt. Practice Problems Here are a few more practice problems you can work through to work on your own, with solutions down below! What Is the Place Value of 7 in 1,508,005.078? HINT: Pay attention to the question. Is it asking for place value or digit? HINT: Remember, zeroes still take up a place! Answer: First, we need to fill out our chart. Millions 1 Hundred Thousands 5 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 8 Hundreds 0 Tens 0 Ones 5 Tenths 0 Hundredths 7 Thousandths 8 Next, we need to find the 7. Itââ¬â¢s in the hundredths position, so there are 7 hundredths, or .07! What Digit Is in the Ten-Thousandths Place of 1.284681? HINT: Is the question asking for place value or digit? HINT: Does the place value end in s or ths? Answer: Letââ¬â¢s start with a chart. Weââ¬â¢ll have to make some adjustments, because there are a lot more numbers to the right of the decimal this time. Ones 1 Tenths 2 Hundredths 8 Thousandths 4 Ten Thousandths 6 Hundred Thousandths 8 Millionths 1 Next we look for the ten-thousandths column, since thatââ¬â¢s what the question asked for. The number in that column is 6, and since itââ¬â¢s asking specifically for the digit and not the place value, 6 is our answer! What Is the Place Value of 3 in 3,042.28? HINT: Are we looking for place value or the digit? HINT: Pay attention to zeroes! Answer: As always, we start with a chart. Millions 0 Hundred Thousands 0 Ten Thousands 0 Thousands 3 Hundreds 0 Tens 4 Ones 2 Tenths 2 Hundredths 8 Thousandths 0 Weââ¬â¢re looking for the place value of the 3, so we need to find that first. Itââ¬â¢s in the thousands place, which means the number has 3 thousands, so our answer is 3,000! What Digit Is in the Thousands Place of 32,734.426? HINT: Is this question about digits or place values? HINT: Are we looking for a number to the left or right of the decimal? Answer: Start with a chart! Millions 0 Hundred Thousands 0 Ten Thousands 3 Thousands 2 Hundreds 7 Tens 3 Ones 4 Tenths 4 Hundredths 2 Thousandths 6 The question asks us the digit in the thousands place, so first weââ¬â¢ll find the thousands row. The number in that row is 2, and since the question asks for the digit, thatââ¬â¢s our answer! What Number Is Made up of 2 Hundreds, 0 Thousands, 6 Ten Thousands, 4 Tenths, 9 Ones, and 3 Tens? HINT: Remember, zeroes still take up space! HINT: The decimal always goes between the ones and tenths place. Answer: Letââ¬â¢s make a chart! Millions 0 Hundred Thousands 0 Ten Thousands 6 Thousands 0 Hundreds 2 Tens 3 Ones 9 Tenths 3 Hundredths 0 Thousandths 0 Once weââ¬â¢ve filled in all the blanks, we can write out the number: 602394. However, weââ¬â¢ll need to add a comma and decimal. The decimal goes between the ones and tenths place, so weââ¬â¢ll get 60239.4, and commas go between every third digit starting from the decimal and working to the left. Following that, weââ¬â¢ll end up with 60,239.4! 3 Key Tips for Decimal Place Value Problems Place value is an important skill to develop; once you understand it, youââ¬â¢ll have an easier time understanding large numbers. Understanding it can be tricky, though- itââ¬â¢s a concept that requires a lot of practice and memorization. Use these tips to help you improve your place value understanding until it becomes second nature! Memorize Ths Versus S Whole numbers versus fractions are an easy place to get tripped up when working on place values. Remember: numbers that end in ââ¬Å"thsâ⬠are part of a whole- that means tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. Numbers that end in ââ¬Å"sâ⬠are whole numbers, so tens, hundreds, thousands, et cetera. Always double-check to make sure that youââ¬â¢re looking for the right number. Thousands and thousandths are very different from one another! Draw a Chart Though you will likely eventually develop the ability to tell place values without one, when youââ¬â¢re first starting out itââ¬â¢s wise to use a chart. Itââ¬â¢s way easier to line the numbers up that way than to rely on counting and potentially get them wrong. Donââ¬â¢t Forget Zeroes Zeroes are the nemesis of people just learning place values. Remember, a zero in the middle of a number, such as 104, doesnââ¬â¢t literally mean nothing- itââ¬â¢s a place holder telling you there are no tens. If you skip the zero when writing the number, youââ¬â¢ll end up with an incorrect answer, so be sure that you fill every place! Whatââ¬â¢s Next? One of the places you'll be needing place value most is in understanding decimals. Hate Speech and the First Amendment Research Paper
Hate Speech and the First Amendment - Research Paper Example The United States First Amendment gives people the right to speak even if the listener of the conversation does not agree with you or feels that the speech is hateful or offensive. The protection also covers even the most offensive and controversial speech from any suppression by the government and permits only minimum regulation of the same through limited circumstances. The basis of this is the understanding by the government that free exchange of ideas encourages the proper understanding of the masses and prevents falsehoods, and embodies the fact that the freedom of expression by an individual without the fear of being punished by the government promotes liberty for better governance. By allowing the citizens to express themselves and their opinions no matter the disagreements, the First Amendment has helped in the promotion of transparency and social stability in the American society (United States and United States Supreme Court, 10).This means that under the First Amendment of the constitution of the United States, hate speech is constitutionally protected unless it can be proven that the speaker of the assumed hate speech intended to act violently or provoke an immediate act of violence. The implication of this legal provision in the United States constitution is that a person may be charged with an offence related to hate speech only if the statements uttered by that person constitute a threat or provocation of immediate violence. It also means that even in cases where the speaker of the intended hate speech threatens violence or intended violence, he may only be criminally prosecuted if there is a law that is drawn to apply to the situation in an appropriate manner. The United States government though faced with problems in the definition of hate speech has always endeavored to create laws and policies that discourage indecent behavior as well as creating laws that though do not define hate as crimes or acts. This means that the law tends to regulate acts rather than speech as was evident in the case of R.A.V. v. City of St. Paul, 505 U.S. 377 (1992) where the US Supreme Court debated about the burning of cross by the radical Ku Klux Klan and whether it was a sign of hate speech (Gerstenfeld 10). The superior court in this instance overruled the Minnesota law which it found to be unconstitutional as it violated a youngsterââ¬â¢s First Amendment free speech rights. In Wisconsin v. Mitchell, 508 U.S. 476 (1993) where a white boy was beaten by black teenagers, the debate about the magnitude of the penalty was ruled by the Supreme Court. It held that an increased penalty did not violate the free speech rights of an accused person and therefore the courts could enhance the penalty. From the foregoing discussion, it can be said that the United States constitution which defines hate speech as speech that maligns a person based on the parameters earlier mentioned receives the protection of the First Amendment. The upshot is that whil e the government restricts hate speech, it has a clear understanding that the most effective way of combating the vice is through tolerant and effective strategies to counter the hate speech. It therefore deploys an
